- STUDY for the Minerals BIG QUIZ - see example written answers below
SAMPLE GOOD ANSWERS FROM THE MINERAL QUIZ EARLIER THIS WEEK. Use these as examples of how to write good written test and quiz answers. If you know the material on minerals well, it should be easy for you to answer each question clearly and simply so STUDY!!!
1. Which diagram shows a crystal, A or B? Explain how you know.
Diagram A shows a crystal because the atoms make a repeating pattern, unlike B where the atoms are random.
2. What is a mineral? Be sure to name all of the criteria.
A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic, crystalline solid with a definite chemical composition.
3. Why is the ice in a glacier considered to be a mineral but the water from the same glacier is not?
Ice is a solid (which minerals must be) but the water is a liquid, therefore it cannot be a mineral.
4. Describe the formation of minerals from magma.
As the magma cools slowly underground the atoms begin to arrange themselves into mineral crystals until all of the atoms are part of a mineral and there is no more liquid magma left.
5. Explain how minerals form when they experience a change in pressure and temperature.
As a mineral experiences a change in temperature and/or pressure the atoms in the mineral will tear away from the mineral and join together in a new pattern, creating a new mineral.
