PLATE TECTONICS MODEL GROUP PROJECT:
To help you learn about and understand the Theory of Plate Tectonics you and your group are going to build/draw/create a model that shows many parts of the Earth that are related to Plate Tectonics Theory as well as the processes that are involved in Plate Tectonics. This will be graded as a test and all group members will receive the same grade for the model. Your group will include the students at your table.
In addition to the model, you will earn a group test score. As a part of this project, at the end, each group member will be given a series of questions to answer about Plate Tectonics. You will not know which questions each group member will receive so make sure that everyone in the group is learning and is prepared for the test. The test scores for the group will then be combined into one group score that will be assigned to all members. For the test you will want to know all the parts listed below and be able to explain how lithosphere is created, destroyed and recycled on Earth. You should also be able to explain why some lithosphere sinks while other lithosphere does not, why certain types of volcanoes form where they do and why the plates on Earth move.
Lastly, you will earn an individual score based on how well you participated in the group and how much you contributed to the project. You will be grading each other as group members. You will have the opportunity to evaluate how much work each member has contributed as well as how hard each member has worked. This will be included in your individual grade.
THE MODEL: The model can be 3-dimensional, like a ball, or 2-dimensional like a large poster. No matter how your group chooses to construct your model, your model should include all of the following items & information. Each of these must be represented in graphic form as well as labeled and each must be accurate to receive credit.
The Earth’s layers
o Your model should show the inner and outer core, the mantle, the asthenosphere and the lithosphere (including oceanic and continental crust)
o The composition of each layer should be labeled.
o Either the thickness of the layer or the depth of the layer boundaries should be labeled. Be sure to indicate if you have used miles or kilometers.
Tectonic Plates
o Your model should depict that the lithosphere is broken into tectonic plates.
o Your model should show what each plate is made of in at least one location. It is not necessary to create the entire model at this level of detail.
o The parts of a plate should be labeled.
Mantle Convection
o Your model should show the thermal convection of the mantle.
o Indicate if you are showing the whole mantle model or the deep layer model.
o The process of convection should be labeled and explained on the model.
4 Plate Boundaries
o Your model should show a convergent, divergent, and transform plate boundary in correct locations on Earth. Include the following for each plate boundary:
Oceanic Convergent Plate Boundary (choose either ocean-ocean, ocean-continent)
• Show all of the parts of the plate boundary like we labeled in class
• Show the appropriate volcano or volcanoes (see volcanoes section for more info)
• Have an explanation of what is taking place at this plate boundary. This may be directly on the model or as a supplemental pamphlet to go with the model.
Continental Convergent Boundary
• Show all of the parts of the plate boundary like we labeled in class
• Show the appropriate volcano or volcanoes (see volcanoes section for more info)
• Have an explanation of what is taking place at this plate boundary. This may be directly on the model or as a supplemental pamphlet to go with the model.
Divergent Plate Boundary
• Show all of the parts of the plate boundary like we labeled in class
• Show the appropriate volcano or volcanoes (see volcanoes section for more info)
• Have an explanation of what is taking place at this plate boundary. This may be directly on the model or as a supplemental pamphlet to go with the model.
Transform Plate Boundary
• Show all of the parts of the plate boundary like we labeled in class
• Show the appropriate volcano or volcanoes (see volcanoes section for more info)
• Have an explanation of what is taking place at this plate boundary. This may be directly on the model or as a supplemental pamphlet to go with the model.
Volcanoes
o Your model should show each of the 6 types of volcanoes: shield, cinder cone, fissure flow, stratovolcano, plug dome, caldera.
o Each type of volcano should be located in a place on earth where the magma type that forms the volcano would form.
o There should be a simple explanation for why/ how that type of magma formed at that location. (hint: This information will be related to the different plate boundaries.)
HINTS / SUGGESTIONS
o Your model only needs to be detailed where you are trying to show specific information. You may have the rest of the model be a simplified version with just the required parts showing lots of detail and information.
o You may create an informational pamphlet or small poster to accompany your model if it is 3-dimensional. This will allow you to have written explanations for the different parts. Just be sure to use some type of code system that would allow an observer to match the explanation to the model.
o You may use a large, tri-fold poster and draw/create your model on the center portion and then use the sides for more details and/or explanations.
o You may use a variety of materials (paper, foam, cloth, glue, paint, etc…) to construct your model, however no perishable food items should be used. For example, do not use items like fruit or cheese as they will spoil. You may however, use dry foods like pasta or seeds if you feel they are appropriate.
RULES
o Everything on the model must be created by your team. This means that you cannot print or copy diagrams and then paste them onto the model.
o Handwriting must be neat and easy to read.
o If you choose to write any part by hand be sure you are consistent with the rest of the model and write similar parts by hand.
o All explanations must be your own. Plagiarism will earn you a 0 on the project FOR THE ENTIRE GROUP and a referral to the office. BE RESPONSIBLE TO THE GROUP AND CHECK EACH OTHER’S WORK!
YOUR GROUP
As a member of a group you are responsible not only for yourself but for the other members of the group. Remember that you have a responsibility not to let them down. You should maintain clear communication in your group at all times and work together to resolve conflicts. This means that you should trade contact information and be sure to inform your group if you know you will be absent, if you know you cannot follow through with something you are supposed to do, or if you have a question for them. It also means that you will probably have to compromise on some ideas and complete some parts of the project that you would prefer not to. This is all part of the group experience and is to be expected.
