AGENDA:

  • 10 mins. to finish Logos Country Questions as a group
  • Go over answers to Logos Country Questions
  • Begin HW if time
HOMEWORK:
  1. Due tomorrow: Topo map worksheet p. 6, 7 (look at bottom of the page)
  2. Due tomorrow: Topo Profiles WS
  3. Study for your TEST and organize your maps notebook!
Answers to Topo Map worksheet p. 6, 7.
 page 6:
  1. What is the elevation at the intersection of Jones Road and Smith Road?
      1. b). 500 m   This is the answer because when you find the place on the map where those 2 roads meet you will see that they meet at a contour line that is labeled 500m.
  2. What is the elevation of the highest contour line on hill W?
      1. c). 560 m   This is the answer because the contour interval of the map (which is labeled at the bottom of the map) is 10 meters and the contour line at the top of the hill W is 6 lines above a contour line labeled 500 m.
  3. On which side of hill X is the steepest slope found?
      1. d). the southwest.  Remember, the closer together the contour lines are, the steeper the land.  (if you would have answered WEST to this question, so would I.  Just remember, on a multiple choice question look at the available choices and choose the best one that fits.  :) )
  4. In which general direction is Trout brook flowing when it passes under Smith road?
      1. a) northeast     Look for Trout Brook on the map and follow it to Smith Road.  Then look for the V's in the contours around Trout Brook.  The V closest to Smith Road is pointing to the southwest (and up, of course) and the river will flow downhill in the opposite direction of the V, so it is flowing northeast.
  5. Which diagram best represents the profile along a straight line between points A and B?
      1. #2 is the best choice.  The elevation at point A is 500 meters and the elevation at point B is also 500 meters.  They are both on hills and there is a valley in between them and so choice # 2 is the only profile that shows A and B at the same height and with a valley in between them.
Page 7:
  1. State the general direction in which Cottonwood Creek is flowing.
    1. Cottonwood creek is flowing to the northeast.  If you look at the contour lines that cross cottonwood creek you will see that they make a V shape and that the V shape points to the southwest.  Remember that V's point UPHILL and that water flows DOWNHILL,  therefore the creek will flow to the northeast.
  2. State the HIGHEST POSSIBLE elevation, to the nearest meter, for point B on the topographic map.
    1.  If you look at the map at Point B you will see that it sits on a hill (because the contour lines make a circle) above a contour line with a value of 580 meters.  Looking at all of the contour lines on the map you can see that the contour interval is 20 meters.  Therefore, the absolute highest point that B could be sitting at is 599 meters - based on the contour interval,  if point B was at 600 meters there would be another contour line!
  3. DON'T WORRY ABOUT QUESTION # 3!  :)
