GEOSCIENCE IS A COLLEGE PREPARATORY COURSE!  Allow me  to clear up some of the confusion about Geoscience and it's status as a college preparatory class.

CSU Schools
From the CSU Admissions Requirements site:
At least 1 year of physical science and 1 year of  biological science, one from the “d” subject area
and the other from the “d” or “g” area**
                                        CSU Admissions Page

UC Schools
From the UC A-G Admissions site:
One unit (equivalent to one year or two semesters) is required. Courses must fall within, or combine in an interdisciplinary fashion, the “a-f” subject areas.

This requirement can be satisfied by:

Completion of one additional, advanced UC-approved “a-f” course, or
Completion of a course that has been specifically approved for the elective ("g") area.
                                                      UC A-G Electives Page

The TUSD Geoscience course is listed in the UC Course Directory as an A-G Elective class.  This means that it counts as an elective course for UC Admissions. UC A-G Classes for TUSD - see electives at the bottom

Additionally, Geoscience fullfills 1 year of physical science for High School Graduation!  And if that is not reason enough, the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics that Geoscience Jobs are growing at 21%, which is faster than average.  This means that there will be many job opportunities for people who would like a career studying the earth.  The Bureau also indicates that the median annual salary for Geo-scientist's is $82, 500.00 per year!  (Bureau of Labor Statistics )

*Have fun at the Parade tonight!  The temperatures will be very low for the parade so dress warmly.  The timing for the rain indicates that it should not start until after the parade - yay!

Tonights forecast:  Weatherunderground- Turlock

As for the rumors of SNOW here is the scientific forecast discussion:

Given cold atmosphere already in place and cold origin of the system there will be very low snow levels...possibly down to the valley floor at times and snow ratios will be 25 to 1 over the higher elevations. Have raised precip/snow amounts over the mountains and expect total snowfall 12 to 24 inches at pass level with snow rates over an inch an hour likely. These amounts are supported by the sref plume ensembles. Best timing for the heaviest snow will be between 11pm and 6am tonight over the Sierra including I 80 and Highway 50. Have added rain/snow mix for much of the valley floor after midnight due to likely evaporative and dynamic cooling processes...but surface temps will remain in the mid 30's and any accumulations will be light and confined to grassy surfaces. Will continue all winter storm warnings.

100 POINT EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY

SOLID WASTE INVENTORY BAG
Purpose: The purpose of this project is for the students to inventory all solid waste items used in a seven-day period which would enter the waste-stream or be recycled.

Student Objectives: Students will become more aware of their overall resource use (number and type of materials) and more familiar with various approaches which may reduce the number of overall “throughput” they have in a given period of time. We all rely on many resources, materials, and products in our daily lives, many of which are used by the consumer for a relatively short time. The physical act of recording items used on the Solid Waste Inventory (S.W.I.) This tally sheet has the potential to serve as a distinct memory for those who thoroughly and honestly complete the assignment.

Materials: Solid Waste Inventory Tally Sheet (all students) and brown paper grocery bags (or other bag type). Bag(s) should have an Geoscience S.W.A.G. label listing student name and period.

Procedure: All students are to keep a running inventory of their solid wastes throughout the week, with a final tally of the number of items in each major material category (paper, paperboard/cardboard, plastic, aluminum, Styrofoam  mixed materials, glass, etc. being tabulated at the end of this time.  Students will save all of their solid waste for a total of 7 days. If the item might present a health concern, such as used hygiene items and food waste just take a picture of it and record it in your tally sheet - do not carry the item around. ADDITIONALLY - DO NOT BRING ANY GLASS  TO SCHOOL - INSTEAD RECORD ANY GLASS ITEMS ON THE LIST AND THEN RECYCLE THEM.  On the last day students will bring their bags to school with a completed tally sheet that totals the materials by category, then calculate a total mass of all their annual solid waste production based on this seven day period.

Additionally the students will carry all solid waste materials which they use.  Students must carry all solid waste materials which they generate/use during the assigned seven day inventory period, except materials which may be a concern. Students must carry their solid waste bag(s) in a visible manner with them at all times during the school day. Students cannot simply store their solid waste bag in their locker, a class, car, or hide it in your back pack. You must educate 2 students per day on what you are doing and generate some awareness between them and their trash.   The educated students will sign your bag.  (Students participating in a sport or other extracurricular activity do not have to carry their solid waste bag(s) during this activity.) You will also need to educate your teachers (1 per day) on what you are doing and why, and have them sign your bag.

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated based on completion of the Solid Waste Inventory Tally sheet and responses to the project questions.
