*The 1st Atmosphere TEST is Friday.  The test is on Ch 17 and Ch 18.1.  For the test be sure you know and can explain the following:

  • the layers of the atmosphere
  • why the layers change
  • unique features of the layers
  • The evolution of Earth's atmosphere
  • How the tilt of Earth on it's axis changes the heating of the atmosphere - why doe this happen? Explain in terms of angle of light and energy absorbed
  • How are seasons formed?
  • What is the greenhouse effect and how does it work?
  • Be able to explain each of the 4 temperature control case studies from Ch. 17.3


AGENDA:
  • Turn in What The's
  • Stamp yesterdays completed lab and greenhouse effect comic
  • Temperature Controls Notes (If you were absent from class today for testing be sure to carefully read and understand Ch. 17.3 in book)

*A sad example of the relevance of Earth Science classes.  Landslide Blog post on Oso landslip in Washington State

*30 point Extra Credit Opportunity:

  • Read the post above about the landslip in Oso, Washington (above).
  • Read one newspaper article about the landslip as well.  Try CNN, The Seattle Times, etc..
  • Write 1 page that explains the following;
    • which Earth Systems are involved in the slide.  Name the system and what is the example of the system involved.  (for example the hydrosphere is involved through the rainfall.)
    • which 3 chapters we studied in class that are part of the process of the slide
    • Can an Earth Science class help people to be prepared for something like this? Please explain your thoughts in detail.
